WATERTOWN - A week after their worst loss of the season, the New London-Spicer girls basketball team rebounded and played a solid game against the same team.
Unfortunately for the Wildcats, that effort didn't produce a win, either.
Watertown-Mayer hit 9 of 10 free throws in two overtime periods and edged NLS 71-68 in a Wright County Conference game on Friday.
Conversely, the Wildcats were just 1 of 6 from the foul line in the extra periods.
"It was better than last week," said Wildcats head coach Mike Dreier of his team's performance after a 62-47 loss to Watertown-Mayer last week in New London.

"But it was a game that was so winnable," he said. "We had chances but we didn't make our free throws down the stretch."
Watertown-Mayer (18-2) had three players score 20 or more points. Claire Killian scored 24, Monica Czinano had 21 and Kirstin Klitzke finished with 20 for the Royals, who are ranked No. 5 in Class AA.
NLS (13-3) is ranked No. 6 in Class AA. The Wildcats' Erin Tebben notched an impressive double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds.
Brooke Beuning had 16 points, five assists and four steals and Morgan Swenson finished with 13 points and seven rebounds. Kabrie Weber had eight points and seven rebounds.
The Wildcats face tough Wright County Conference road tests next week-at Glencoe-Silver Lake on Tuesday and at Annandale on Thursday. Dreier said he hopes the team responds positively.
"We need to bounce back in the right direction and not let this fester into something not so good," Dreier said.

LQPV 50, CMCS 46 OT
Lac qui Parle Valley got back on track by holding off a strong comeback effort from Central Minnesota Christian School Friday night in overtime.
The Eagles led 23-19 at halftime and extended the lead to 31-19 at a point in the second half but the Bluejay defense buckled down to hold the Eagles scoreless for more than five minutes to take the lead. LQPV regained the lead but CMCS tied the game with a buzzer-beating layup to force overtime.
Free throws were the difference in overtime, though, as the Eagles drilled six-of-eight from the charity stripe while holding the Bluejays to only one field goal.
CMCS' Ellie Greenwaldt led all scorers with 19 points while LQPV's Haley Wollschlager scored 14 points.
