NLS kicks off postseason with three-set win

NEW LONDON -- New London-Spicer made quick work of Minnewaska in a shutout during the opening round of the Section 3AA tournament on Thursday night in New London.

NEW LONDON - New London-Spicer made quick work of Minnewaska in a shutout during the opening round of the Section 3AA tournament on Thursday night in New London.

Erin Tebben led the team with 13 kills as the Wildcats held the Lakers to 18, 20 and 22 points in the three sets.

Brooke Beuning was also strong. She finished with 32 set assists and three service aces. She also led the team with 11 digs.

The Wildcats fought back a resilient Minnewaska team who started all three sets with with small runs. NLS couldn't create incredible distance in any of the sets but held on enough for a relatively straightforward shutout win.

The Wildcats and Lakers were the only teams from Section 3AA to play Thursday night so NLS will await the winner of Friday night's match between No. 2 Litchfield and No. 7 Benson. The second round will get under way on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the high seed's home gym.

Hancock saw its season come to an end on Thursday against top-seeded Underwood who dispatched with the Owls in three sets in the Section 6A playoffs.

Kassandra Algarate and Sabrina Mattson led the way with three kills. Mattson also had the team's only ace and three set assists.

Makenna Steffel was dominant as BOLD advanced to the quarterfinals of the Section 2A volleyball tournament Thursday night.

Steffel finished with 16 kills, eight set assists and four solo blocks in the three-set match in Olivia.

Makayla Snow recorded a team-high 21 set assists and five solo blocks. She also finished with six kills.

KMS continued its late season resurgence with a win in the Section 5A postseason opener against ACGC.

Sam Gjerde helped her teammates out with 38 set assists. Tori Everson and Molly Jeppesen took advantage of those assists, recording 12 and 10 kills respectively.
