No. 6 Bluejays move on with section victory

Central Minnesota Christian beats Renville County West 3-1 in Section 3A North playoffs

PRINSBURG — Sixth-seeded Central Minnesota Christian earned a Section 3A North quarterfinal appearance with its 3-1 victory over Renville County West on Monday night.

The Bluejays beat the 11th-seeded Jaguars, 22-25, 25-21, 25-13, 25-15.

CMCS (15-15) advances to plays at 7 p.m. Friday at No. 3 Canby in the quarterfinals. Canby had a first-round bye.

For the Bluejays, Molly Mulder had 13 kills and Maikke Dunninck added 11. Coco Dinninck had 29 set assists and Torri Muzik contributed 21 digs.

For RCW (7-23), Hannah Pfarr led a balanced attack with 10 kills and also contributed four blocks. Lauren Wulf had 30 set assists and Vannessa Savig added 38 digs.

Ninth-seeded Lac qui Parle Valley went on the road and secured a spot in the Section 3A-North quarterfinals with a three-set win over No. 8 Dawson-Boyd, 27-25, 25-23, 25-14.

The Eagles fought back from set point two times in the first to go up 1-0, setting the tone for the victory.

Tori Bungarden led LQPV with 17 kills along with eight digs.

“She did a good job all the way around for us,” Eagles head coach Molly Hennen said of Bungarden. “I think that was probably the best game I’ve seen her play. She was on fire in the front row.”

Tayler Kittelson came up with 27 set assists while Sidney Gerdes kept the ball off the floor for LQPV with 21 digs.

The Eagles will go back on the road Thursday to face top-seeded Minneota.

Like their match in the regular season back on Sept. 16, Yellow Medicine East got the best of Wabasso in three sets. This time, it came in the Section 3A-North playoffs as the seventh-seeded Sting defeated the No. 10 Rabbits 25-16, 27-25, 25-16.

Alli Steffen was YME’s top attacker with 13 kills while also putting up a team-best 19 digs. Madison Hinz put up 21 set assists while Yansi Flores scooped up 13 digs.

The Sting will take on No. 2 Lakeview Friday in Cottonwood.

Ninth-seeded Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart advanced in the Section 2A-North playoffs with a four-set victory against eighth-seeded Nicollet, 25-19, 21-25, 25-17, 25-17.

Allison Dornseif had 36 set assists, five blocks, five digs and a pair of ace serves for the Mustangs. Sara Kottke led the attack with 20 kills, followed by 10 from Marissa Ebbers. Katie Buboltz kept the ball alive in the back row with 22 digs.

BLHS will try to play spoiler again when it faces top-seeded Mayer Lutheran on Thursday.

Jags top seed in sub-section

Hoping to make a return to the Class A state tournament, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa is one of the top seeds in the Section 5A tournament.

In the South A sub-section, the Jaguars (19-8) are the top seed and will take on the winner of No. 5 Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City and No. 4 Kimball Friday in Brooten. ACGC (2-21) and Kimball (2-20) will play Thursday in Kimball.

Benson (8-15) got the three seed and will host No. 6 Kaleidoscope Charter (2-19) on Thursday, with the winner facing No. 2 Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg (15-11).
