Northwoods League: MoonDogs shut down Stingers' bats, 5-2

Mankato pitchers strike out 13 and walk 1 to beat Willmar before 1,805 fans at ISG Field

MANKATO — Three Mankato pitchers held Willmar to six hits, striking out 13 and walking one.

It added up to a 5-2 MoonDog victory over the Stingers on Wednesday night before 1,805 fans at ISG Field.

Drew Buhr went the first six innings, striking out eight and walking one for Mankato (12-12). The right-hander from Bellarmine University allowed five hits and two earned runs to improve his record to 2-0. He was followed by Thomas Bruss, who pitched a scoreless seventh, striking out two. Bruss is a 6-foot-8, 270-pound right-hander from Augustana University. Then came Luke Young, who got the save after striking out three in two innings. Young is a right-hander from Midland College in Texas.

Josh Fitzgerald and Brett Bateman had multiple-hit games for Willmar (13-11). Fitzgerald, a redshirt sophomore at Dallas Baptist University, went 2-for-3 with a run and a stolen base. Fitzgerald, a left fielder, is batting .276 (8 of 29) with a .323 on-base and a .345 slugging percentage. He’s 4-for-4 stealing bases.

Bateman, a sophomore at the University of Minnesota, was 2-for-3 with a walk and two stolen bases. Bateman is batting .293 (24 of 82) with a .366 on-base percentage and 305 slugging percentage. He’s a center fielder from Arden Hills.

Willmar continues its road trip with a game against the St. Cloud Rox at 7:05 p.m. Thursday at Joe Faber Field.
