Northwoods League: St. Cloud takes two from Willmar

Rox beat Stingers 5-3 and 9-3 in doubleheader

ST. CLOUD — Stringing together four runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings, the St. Cloud Rox secured a 9-3 Northwoods League win, locking up the doubleheader sweep over the Willmar Stingers on Wednesday at Joe Faber Field.

In Game 1, St. Cloud won, 5-3.

In the nightcap, Andrew Pinckney and Caleb Ricketts were both 3-for-5 for the Rox (16-6). Pinckney, a sophomore from the University of Alabama, batted from the leadoff spot, scoring a run. Ricketts, a sophomore from the University of San Diego, had a double, three RBIs and a run scored.

Texas Christian University redshirt freshman Riley Cornelio was the winning pitcher for St. Cloud, striking out six while allowing no runs on three hits and three walks over five innings.

For Willmar, William Hamiter, Reid Homan, Grant Kerry and Daniel Sayre each had two hits. Hamiter, a redshirt freshman from Alabama, hit for a double while tallying an RBI and a run scored.

Tanner Brown, a junior from Augustana University, fell to 0-2 after allowing four runs on six hits and four walks with five strikeouts over five innings.

The Stingers (11-13) look to end its three-game losing streak at home Thursday against the Rochester Honkers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

St. Cloud rallied to beat Willmar in Game 1 of the doubleheader at Joe Faber Field.

The Rox trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh. They scored one in the seventh to tie it, then added two in the eighth to take the leader.

For Willmar, Reid Homan went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Carter Howell was 2-for-5 with two runs, a double and a stolen base.
