Northwoods League: Stingers hammer MoonDogs

Willmar gets strong pitching from Ryan Jares, balanced hitting to beat Mankato 12-0 at Bill Taunton Stadium.

WILLMAR — The Willmar Stingers and Mankato MoonDogs have been neck-and-neck in the Northwoods League standings, both spending time in second place behind St. Cloud.

On Tuesday, Willmar was way ahead of Mankato.

The Stingers beat the MoonDogs 12-0 before an announced crowd of 900 at Bill Taunton Stadium.

St. Cloud, 13-10 in the Great Plains East Division, scored three in the first, one in the second, then got four in the sixth and four more in the seventh to pound the Mankato (11-12).

Ryan Jares went seven shutout innings for the Stingers to improve his record to 2-0. The right-hander from Augustana University struck out six, walked one and scattered six hits.

Kyle Payne, Drey Dirksen, Jakob Christian and Brett Bateman all had two hits for Willmar, which also got a home run from Jake Entrekin.

Owen Boerema started for Mankato. The left-hander from Litchfield and Kansas State went five innings. He allowed five hits and four runs, one earned. He struck out three and walked two.

The teams resume their two-game series Wednesday in Mankato.
