Paynesville rolls in 6AA baseball

COLD SPRING -- Paynesville will get another shot at a state tournament berth after beating down Staples-Motley 17-4 to advance in Section 6AA-West baseball on Wednesday.

COLD SPRING -- Paynesville will get another shot at a state tournament berth after beating down Staples-Motley 17-4 to advance in Section 6AA-West baseball on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs (17-4), who won their seventh straight subsection crown, pounded out 20 hits, including two home runs.

"That's the best hitting we've had all season," said Paynesville coach Brad Skoglund. "Our guys really brought their hitting shoes."

After the Bulldogs scored nine runs in the first inning to take a 9-2 lead, Aaron Savelkoul rapped a two-run home run to right field in the second, followed by Nathan Nietfeld's two-run blast to left.

Savelkoul, who pitched all five innings for the win, and Jason Kampsen went 3-for-3 each, followed by Casey Hess, Shane Kampsen, Jake Deadrick, Nietfeld and Jordan Lieser.

The Bulldogs will play the winner of the Rocori-St. Cloud Cathedral game at 7 p.m. Monday at Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud.

Loser's bracket New London-Spicer 8, Melrose 5

A six-run sixth inning propelled New London-Spicer to an 8-5 win over Melrose Wednesday in Section 6AA baseball.

Down by a run in the bottom of the inning, the Wildcats strung together four hits, a walk and a Melrose error to take an 8-3 lead.

Luke Reiter, Kevin Soine and Luke Peterson led the NLS offense with two hits each. Soine and Peterson drove in two runs and Reiter legged out a triple.

Shawn Hatlestad earned the win, scattering six hits while giving up three runs over five innings. He also hit a two-run single in the sixth inning.
