Prep Athletics: Mottinger, Carlson named Cardinals’ top 2016 athletes

WILLMAR -- Haley Mottinger and Colten Carlson are Willmar High School's Lions Award winners for 2016.The awards, which honor the Cardinals' top scholar-athletes, were presented Sunday during the school's annual Willmar Senior Athletic Awards Program.

The awards, which honor the Cardinals’ top scholar-athletes, were presented Sunday during the school’s annual Willmar Senior Athletic Awards Program.
The awards program also honored athletes in four other categories, as well as noting team captains and state tournament participants.
Mottinger earned 12 varsity letters in four sports and she also won seven state meet medals. She was a four-time gymnastics All-State and state qualifier, and she is a five-time All-Central Lakes Conference performer in gymnastics and track and field.
This spring, Mottinger set Willmar’s school record in the 100-meter dash and she also competes in relays and the pole vault.
Carlson is a three-sport athlete who competes in football, wrestling and track and field.
Carlson won the Class AAA 160-pound state championship, ending the season 46-1 and his career as Willmar’s all-time wins leader with 225.
Carlson won six letters, appeared in five state tournaments and was All-State three times after winning a title, placing second as a sophomore and fourth as a junior.
For the Cardinals’ football team, Carlson started three years, earning several honors as a two-way player, and he’s a staple in the 800-meter run and 4X800 relays in track.
Mottinger and Carlson both received $500 scholarships sponsored by the Willmar coaching staff.
Other award and scholarship winners included:
True Grit - Alexis Miley and Dakota Tjaden (given to seniors demonstrating heart, desire and character).
Dean Anderson Scholarship - Courtney Hanson and Riley Grabow (given to seniors who exhibit dedications and commitment).
Jim Helin Memorial Award - Jordan Sankey and Nadir Yusuf (given to seniors who are letterwinners who exhibit high character, morals and are team leaders).
Lane Erickson Memorial Scholarship - Maite Marin-Mera and Tate Hovland (given to seniors with high academic achievement and are leaders on their teams).
Triple A Awards - Marin-Mera and Hovland (honoring state student-athletes who excell in academics, athletics and the arts).

Boys Cross Country: Yusuf.
Girls Cross Country: Jessa Hanson.
Football: Carlson.
Boys Soccer: David Gomez.
Girls Soccer: Hannah Johnson.
Girls Swimming: Anna Backes.
Boys Basketball: Noah Slagter.
Girls Basketball: Heidi Sellmann and Kayla Rudie.
Gymnastics: Mottinger.
Boys’ Hockey: Isaac Kobienia.
Girls Hockey: Savana Knutson.
Boys Nordic Skiing: Jack Erickson.
Girls Nordic Skiing: Marina Moyers.
