MELROSE -- Tanner Klaphake walked with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, forcing home the winning run as Melrose nipped New London-Spicer 2-1 in West Central North baseball on Tuesday.
New London-Spicer's Shawn Hatlestad and Melrose's Jordan Moscho were locked in a scoreless duel through five innings that took only 50 minutes to play. Melrose (8-8, 10-10) then scored an unearned run in the sixth inning to take a 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats (5-10, 7-11) tied the game in the top of the seventh. Brandon Lang doubled with one out and an error put runners on first and third. Tyler Thunstedt then singled to score Lang before Moscho enticed a double play to escape further trouble.
In the bottom of the seventh, an infield error and a walk put two Melrose runners aboard. With two outs, Hatlestad, who had walked only two batters in the previous six innings, walked his second of the inning to load the bases. Klaphake then followed by drawing another free pass to end the game.
Hatlestad allowed only four hits, while walking five and striking out three.
