Prep baseball: Berg's homer boosts Minnewaska

MADISON -- Trenton Berg hit a three-run homer to help put Minnewaska in a second-place tie in the West Central South Conference as the Lakers upended Lac qui Parle Valley 4-1 Thursday.

The Lakers improved to 9-3 in the conference while the Eagles fell to 11-3. Morris/Chokio-Alberta has a one-game lead with four games left on its conference schedule.

Berg's blast came in the first and Mike Nielsen drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Dustin Helmick worked all seven innings to earn the win, giving up three hits while striking out three and not issuing a walk.

Sam Haas scored the Eagles' only run when he came home on Brandon Weber's groundout.

Paynesville 8, Benson 1

Anthony Berreau and Logan Connelly combined to hold Paynesville (11-4, 13-4) hitless through four innings. But the Bulldogs then plated four runs in both the fifth and sixth to take control. Josh Bungum and Jason Kampsen both hit two-run singles.

Kampsen limited Benson (4-10, 4-10) to just four hits while working on the mound for Paynesville and also struck out 10 without issuing a walk in a complete-game performance.

Luke Schwarz doubled in the seventh before scoring Benson's only run on Cody Hammerschmidt's single.

Derek Dyrdahl hit a two-run homer, singled twice and scored four runs to lead Yellow Medicine East (5-9, 7-9) at Grove City. Austin Thorstad singled twice and plated two runs.

Aaron Zieske went six nings for the win. He gave up nine hits.

Trevor Heining and Dylan Rossell each had a pair of hits for Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City (1-14, 1-15). Rossell knocked in two runs.

A slugfest in Morris went Montevideo's way as the Thunder Hawks trimmed the Tigers' conference lead to one game.

Colton Vien in the first and Joe Bednar in the fifth launched three-run homers for Montevideo (3-11, 4-12) and a Morris/Chokio-Alberta (10-2, 14-2) throwing error in the seventh proved to be the winning margin. Tyler Kuno paced the attack by going 3-for-3 and scoring three runs.

Eric Riley slugged a three-run homer in the sixth to pull the Tigers within two. A two-run homer in the seventh from Tyler Hansen capped the scoring for the Tigers. Hansen and Cole Riley both had three hits.
