Prep Baseball: Cards fall twice to Brainerd

WILLMAR -- Willmar pieced together some hits in Game Two of a Central Lakes doubleheader but not enough to push across runners as the Cardinals dropped a pair to Brainerd on Tuesday at Bill Taunton Stadium.

WILLMAR - Willmar pieced together some hits in Game Two of a Central Lakes doubleheader but not enough to push across runners as the Cardinals dropped a pair to Brainerd on Tuesday at Bill Taunton Stadium.

Brainerd took the first game 6-0 and won Game Two 3-1.

In the second game, Brainerd took a 3-0 lead in the first but Willmar showed life in the sixth, scoring a run.

But despite threatening in that inning and in the seventh, Brainerd held the Cards off.

After scoring, Willmar had runners on second and third with one out but couldn’t get another run in.

In the seventh, the Cardinals’ first two batters reached but, again, couldn’t put a number on the scoreboard.

“Both games were pretty competitive,” said Willmar head coach Tom DeBoer. “Both were tight games but we couldn’t string enough hits together to get any runs across.”

Tyler Johnson and Brayden Sunder had Willmar’s two hits in Game One.

In Game Two, Noah Streed and Noah Vreeman both had two hits, and Dalton Rambow doubled and drove in the Card’s run in the sixth.

Willmar plays on the road against a section opponent, Monticello, at 5 p.m. Friday

“We try to build on the positives and get better every day,” DeBoer said.
