Prep Baseball: Lakers’ Thompson no-hits Staples-Motley

GLENWOOD -- Riley Thompson tossed a six-inning no-hitter and top-seeded Minnewaska took out Staples-Motley 10-0 in the first round of the Section 6AA-West playoffs.

GLENWOOD - Riley Thompson tossed a six-inning no-hitter and top-seeded Minnewaska took out Staples-Motley 10-0 in the first round of the Section 6AA-West playoffs.
Thompson struck out seven and walked three, and was backed by 12 Lakers hits.
Minnewaska will face No. 5-seed Foley 5 p.m. today at Faber Field in St. Cloud in the subsection semifinals.
The Lakers built a 5-0 lead in the third inning keyed by Jackson Hendrickson’s two-run double.
After scoring again in the fourth, they plated four to end the game in the sixth on three hits, two walks and a hit batter.
Luke Nielsen had three hits and three RBIs, and Hendrickson and Michael Gruber each had two hits.

Brandin Dahl was 2-for-3 and drove in a run as Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg crushed Eden-Valley Watkins 14-4 in the Section 5A-West semifinals Tuesday in Sunburg.
KMS (11-9) reliever Brandon Rasmusson earned the pitching win going 1.1 innings with no hits or runs allowed.
Israel Rodriguez was 1-for-2 with a RBI and Ryan Hatlestad was 1-for-3 for the Saints.
Up next for KMS will be against Kimball in Cold Springs in the Sub Section Final at 7 p.m.

Brandon Hill got the pitching victory and also ended Lac qui Parle Valley’s victory over Renville County West with a hit in the sixth to keep the Eagles’ season alive on Tuesday in Montevideo.
The loss ended RCW’s season and LQPV will play another elimination game on Thursday in Sacred Heart against Camden Conference rival MACCRAY at 5 p.m.
Hill surrendered just one hit - a second-inning single to Brody Elfering - and struck out five in five innings of work on the mound. The senior singled twice at the plate, including in the sixth when it knocked in Austin Domeier to invoke the 10-run rule.
Domeier, Ty Kanstrup and Garrett Olson also had two hits apiece as LQPV used a 12-hit attack, 11 walks and seven RCW errors to improve to 16-4 on the season.
Elfering on a groundout and Thomas Froland on a double steal scored for the Jaguars.

Brady Jergenson tossed a one-hitter with six strikeouts and a late RBI double from Sean Amundson allowed Morris/Chokio-Alberta to stay alive in the elimination bracket on Tuesday in Montevideo.
Jergenson needed just 83 pitches to outduel Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop starter Nolan Huiras and give the Tigers another elimination-bracket game on Thursday. The Tigers (13-9) will play the Marshall Tigers at 5 p.m. in Marshall.
Morris/Chokio-Alberta could’ve given Jergenson some early support, but Toby Sayles was thrown out at the plate in the second inning trying to score from second on a Trent Marty single.
Three innings later Marty struck out leading off the fifth, but the third strike reached the dirt, allowing Marty to reach. Nic Solvie then moved Marty to second with a sacrifice bunt and Amundson followed with a double to left to bring in Marty and give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers finished with five hits and Jergenson allowed only two GFW base runners to reach second.
Huiras got tagged with the hard-luck loss as he struck out five without issuing a walk.

New London-Spicer was dropped into the elimination bracket on Tuesday as the Wildcats couldn’t recover from being shut out for the first five innings in Marshall.
Fairmont, the South’s No. 1 seed scored twice in the third and two more times in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. NLS scored in the sixth after Wyatt White led off the frame with a single and scored on Will Roguske’s single.
Issac Goetzman and Josh Soine, who had two hits, scored in the seventh for the Wildcats, who stranded five base runners in the first two innings.
Austin Nelson, who won the Wildcats’ postseason opener on Saturday, was tagged with the loss. The right-hander held Fairmont to six hits.
NLS will play today’s Luverne/Jackson County Central winner on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Marshall.
