DELANO - Providence Academy plated five runs in the 10th inning to outlast Litchfield 7-2 in the Section 5AA winner’s bracket final on Tuesday.
The Lions punched their ticket to Thursday’s championship round with the win and will await the winner of today’s Litchfield/Delano game that starts at 7 p.m. in Delano. The Dragons beat Delano 11-8 earlier in the season in Wright County Conference action.
Delano is the five-time defending section champion.
William Wade slugged a solo home run in the first inning for Providence Academy (16-4). The Dragons (17-7) tied the game in the bottom half of the frame when Cody Beavers scored on two throwing errors.
The Lions scored again in the fifth before Litchfield tied the game again in the sixth when Dylan Kotzer scored on a fielder’s choice hit by Jakes Jones.
The game would remain 2-2 until the Lions roared for five runs in the 10th. The Dragons had chances to score again after the sixth, but the West sub-section champion couldn’t capitalize en route to falling into the loser’s bracket final.
Ross Wendlandt worked all 10 innings on the mound for Litchfield. The senior gave up just one walk and struck out four while scattering nine hits and five earned runs.
Jake Schultz and Luke Schultz had two hits apiece for the Dragons, who lost for the first time since May 16.
