Prep Baseball: Paynesville clips Zimmerman to advance

PAYNESVILLE - Colin Riley scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball in the bottom of the sixth and Paynesville edged Zimmerman 5-4 in the first round of the Section 5AA-West playoffs on Friday.
Riley was 2-for-3 and drove in two runs, and Matthew Quade was 2-for-3 with a double to power the Bulldogs’ offense.
Paynesville took an early 2-0 lead, which held until the fifth as Bulldogs starter Brandon Schleper held Zimmerman scoreless through four.
Schleper finished five innings, allowing three runs and striking out three.
Andrew Kerzman tossed the final two innings to pick up the win in relief.
The Thunder plated three in the fifth to take the lead and added one more in the sixth for a 4-2 lead.
Mitchel Mossman was 3-for-4 and drove in two runs for Zimmerman.
Paynesville (13-7) takes on Litchfield in the sub-section semifinals 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in Delano.
