PAYNESVILLE - The top two teams in the West Central South Conference squared off in a Friday doubleheader and, as might be expected, split a pair.
Grant Thompson was 4-for-4 and Brandon Schleper worked a complete game as Paynesville defeated BOLD 9-4 in Game One.
In Game Two, BOLD pitcher Trent Athmann returned the favor, going all seven innings in the Warriors’ 5-2 victory.
Both teams are 6-3 atop the South. Paynesville is 11-5 overall and BOLD is 13-3.
The Bulldogs play Minnewaska at noon in Paynesville’s new stadium, and ACGC also comes to town to play Minnewaska at 2:30 p.m.

In Game One, Paynesville tore the game open with a seven-run second inning. Schleper allowed six hits but no walks while striking out three.
In Game Two, Athmann gave up five hits and just one earned run while striking out four.
Lane Stadther was 2-for-3 and drove in a run.
Paynesville’s Thompson remained hot, with two hits in the second game. Andrew Kerzman took a tough loss. He allowed just seven hits and all five runs were unearned as the Bulldogs commited five errors.

Colton Minnick smashed a solo home run leading off the bottom of the seventh to give Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City a walk-off win in the opener on Friday in Atwater.
Brody Larson was a single shy of hitting for the cycle for the Falcons, Cullen Hoffman doubled and singled, and Ethan Schultz added a two-run double.
Benson’s Logan Flegel hit a two-run single in the top of the third to tie the game at 4, but the Falcons regained the lead in the bottom half of the frame on Schultz’s two-run double.
Aaron Ahrndt added two singles and two RBIs for Benson.

Another home run ended the game as Brett Sulier launched a two-run shot in the ninth to give the Braves a split.
Sulier also got Benson on the board in the fifth with a two-run double. Ahrndt collected two hits again and Dan Lenarz worked all nine innings to earn the win, striking out 10 and giving up just three hits.
Adam Johnson doubled in the ninth and later scored on a two-out error to give ACGC a short-lived 4-3 lead. The Falcons also got RBI singles from Larson and Derek Dengerud.
ACGC (5-9) plays Minnewaska in Paynesville at 3 p.m. and Benson hosts Melrose at 2 p.m. today.

Tanner Stoel pitched a complete-game shutout and Austin Bulthuis drove in two runs as Central Minnesota Christian School won its fifth game of the season Friday.
The Bluejays took advantage of two hit batters and a walk to take a 1-0 first inning lead.

They tacked on two more in the third on Bulthuis’ RBI double and Noah Wubben’s RBI single.
Stoel scattered six hits and four walks, striking out five to earn the win.

Brady Holwerda pitched seven strong innings and struck out eight as Renville County West defeated Minneota on Friday in Renville.
Both Colin Thompson and Hayden Johnson were 1-for-3 with an RBI. Minneota’s Peyton Nuy was 2-for-3 and drove in the team’s only run.
The Jaguars take on Lakeview in the Section 3A-North playoffs next Saturday in Minneota at 1 p.m.

Landon Tanner tossed a five-hitter to lead New London-Spicer to a Game One victory over Mound Westonka in a Wright County Conference doubleheader on Friday in Mound.
The Wildcats completed the sweep with 6-5 win in Game Two.

MACCRAY held off Yellow Medicine East after the Sting pulled within a run with a four-run fifth and won the non-conference game on Friday.
The Wolverines’ Ethan Thien pitched two hitless innings, striking out three, to preserve the team’s lead and get the save.
Thien also had two hits and drove in a run and Braden Bristle was 2-for-3 with a double and three runs batted in.
Chase Christensen was 3-for-4 with a double and scored twice.
YME’s Chase Richter was 2-for-4 and drove in a run and Brandon Schmidt singled and drove in two runs.

Five Litchfield batters had hits, with Carson Deal’s two-run double in the first setting the tone for the Dragons in their victory Friday in the Dick Traen Memorial Wood Bat Classic in Delano.
The Dragons, now 12-5 overall, play at noon today against the the winner of Friday’s Waconia and Kasson-Mantorville game, which was not completed when the Tribune went to press.
