Prep baseball roundup: BOLD wins West Central Conference title

ROSCOE -- The BOLD Warriors scored five times in the top of the seventh to snap a 3-3 tie and defeat Paynesville 8-3 at the Roscoe ballpark on Tuesday.

ROSCOE - The BOLD Warriors scored five times in the top of the seventh to snap a 3-3 tie and defeat Paynesville 8-3 at the Roscoe ballpark on Tuesday.

The Warriors clinched their third straight West Central Conference title with a 12-1 record. Paynesville has two losses in conference play, both to the Warriors.

BOLD (14-2) begins defense of its 2013 State Championship on Saturday hosting Cedar Mountain-Comfrey at 1 p.m. BOLD is No. 2, behind New Ulm Cathedral, in Section 2A.

Logan Sandgren, who beat the Dogs earlier in the month, threw a two-hitter with three walks and nine strikeouts.

The Bulldogs scored three in the third helped by a Blake Karsch two-run single, but the Warriors tied it with three of their own in the fifth.

Riley Kramer had two of BOLD’s 10 hits. Brett Grund supplied a two-run double.

Austin VerSteeg threw a gem walking two and fanning seven in a four-hitter. Justin Amundson, the Lakers’ leadoff, singled twice and doubled while Jon Nygaard in the No. 2 slot had virtually the same line, two singles, a double and two runs.

Justin Amundson, who drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh, scored on a wild pitch to give the Lakers a walk-off win.

Minnewaska built a 3-2 lead on a bases-loaded walk by Austin Ostrander, and an RBI double by Amundson, but the ’Streeters tied it in the top of the sixth.

Michael Gruber earned the win in relief with one scoreless inning.

Jordan Thompson was masterful on the mound, allowing only an unearned run and striking out six in the Thunder Hawks’ West Central Conference win over the Tigers on Tuesday.

Thompson also drove in two runs and Spencer Hildahl drove in three.

Jeff Rohloff was 2-for-4 and scored twice and Ricky Schmitz was 2-for-3 and scored a run.

Four Tigers all had one hit. They play at Minnewaska at 4 p.m. today.

KMS surrendered six unearned runs on seven errors and fell to Lakeview for its 13th loss of the season.

Fred Mansfield and Rylan Hatlestad both knocked two hits, and Caleb Collins was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

Jordan Engler took the loss, going 4.1 innings and allowing two earned runs.

The Fighting Saints (3-13) open Section 5A play as the No. 10 seed on Thursday at 7-seed Royalton.

Minneota’s Peyton Nuy was tough on the Bluejays, allowing just one hit in a Camden Conference game Tuesday in Minneota.

Nuy didn’t walk a batter and struck out six. Austin Bulthuis managed CMCS’ only hit, a single in the fourth inning.

The Bluejays are off until playing Lakeview at 1 p.m. Saturday to open the section playoffs in Madison.

Jonny DeGeest pitch five innings of one-hit, scoreless baseball for the win. Jarrett Hatlestad’s two-run dinger in the top of the sixth. put the Wildcats up 4-0.

Lac qui Parle Valley scored two unearned runs off Ryan Vraa pitching in the sixth; Hatlestad tossed a scoreless seventh for the save.

Vraa was a terror at the plate, lashing three doubles and driving in a run. Trey Austvold double twice.

Ty Kanstrup had the lone hit for the Eagles, who finish 14-6 and will play Canby in Section 3A-North on Saturday in Madison. Lakeview and Central Minnesota Christian also play at the Madison ballpark.

A clutch two-out single from Brandon Behnke scored Jake Schultz, who singled, and Cody Klabunde, who walked, in the sixth inning allowed the Dragons to break a 1-1 tie and end the regular season on a high note.

The Dragons worked three pitchers with middle reliever Riley Johnson gaining the win after throwing a scoreless fourth, fifth and sixth. Schultz picked up a save after striking out two Lakers (12-6) in the seventh.

Litchfield tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth when Eddie Estrada tripled leading off the frame and coming home on a shallow sacrifice fly from Braeden Wahl.
