Prep Baseball Roundup: Bulldogs fight off Sauk Centre's 7th-inning rally

SAUK CENTRE -- Paynesville scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take a four-run lead, then held on through a mistake-filled bottom of the inning to hang on for a 7-6 West Central Conference win over Sauk Centre on Monday.

The Mainstreeters scored three times and had the bases loaded before the Bulldogs got a force out at third base to end the game.

Paynesville’s Colin Riley had two hits and drove in two runs and Trent Gertken and Matt Quade also drove in runs in a game marred by 11 errors by both teams.

The Bulldogs improved to 4-1 overall and they play host to ACGC at 5 p.m. today in Lake Henry.

After Melrose pulled even in the fourth inning, Benson plated two runs in the fifth on a Dutchmen throwing error and an RBI groundout from Brady Young.

The Braves (1-2) then added insurance in the sixth when Taner Gimberlin and Cody Hammerschmidt hit back-to-back RBI singles.

Connor Staton hurled a complete game to pick up the win. The sophomore scattered five hits, an earned run, two walks and four strikeouts.

Hammerschmidt and Adam Lindahl both had three hits to help Benson outhit Melrose 9-5.

The Braves are in Bird Island today to take on the defending Class A champion BOLD Warriors at 5 p.m.

Three innings in, MACCRAY owned a comfortable 10-2 lead, aided by a five-run second in which the Wolverines batted around.

MACCRAY got just eight hits in six innings, but a pair of KMS pitchers each issued six walks. Dylan Abraham and Carter Asche both were 3-for-4 to drive in a combined eight runs.

Caleb Melin was out in his only official at bat, but the senior walked three times and scored four times for MACCRAY, which improved to 3-1 overall.

Derick Sommers, the third of four MACCRAY pitchers, collected the win after throwing the fifth and sixth innings. Asche started and struck out five while surrendering just one hit, one walk and no earned runs in three innings of work.

Fred Mansfield, Travis Lamecker and Rylan Hatlstad each had a single to account for the three KMS hits.

Pierz’ Cody Meyer was tough on the mound, allowing two hits and striking out seven through six innings to help the Pioneers down BBE in a Central Minnesota Conference game on Monday.

Pierz’ Mac Gruber led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run and the Jaguars were held scoreless until the seventh inning when Ricky Schmitz, who had two hits, drove in his team’s lone run.

The Jaguars are 0-1 in the CMC and 1-1 overall. They play a doubleheader at Maple Lake on Thursday beginning at 4 p.m.

Lester Prairie-Holy Trinity scored 12 runs in the first two innings, then added a run in the bottom of the fifth to win in five innings.

BLHS’ Trey Weispfenning drove in two runs and Austin Werner had an RBI.

Daniel Whitaker and Jason Etinger both drove in three runs for LPHT.
