Prep Baseball Roundup: Eden Valley-Watkins thwarts Paynesville's late rally

Eagles beat the Bulldogs 9-7 after being up 9-2 in the Central Minnesota Conference game at Eden Valley. Other Monday winners were: Litchfield, YME, KMS and MACCRAY.

EDEN VALLEY— Up 4-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth, Eden Valley-Watkins managed to tack on five runs to go up 9-2.

The Eagles needed all those runs as Paynesville scored five straight runs. Ultimately, EV-W managed to come away with a 9-7 Central Minnesota Conference baseball win on Monday.

Michael Bautsch and Myles Dziengel both had solo home runs in the third inning for the Eagles. Dziengel finished 2-for-2 with four RBIs and a run scored while Bautsch was 1-for-2 with three runs scored and an RBI.

The Bulldogs’ Eli Nelson also took a ball over the fence with a solo homer in the top of the fourth. He went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Tori Olmscheid also had two hits for Paynesville, driving in a run in the process.

Jackson Geislinger got the win on the mound for EV-W (2-3) after six innings of work. Nolan Geislinger picked up the save with two strikeouts in one inning.


Ryan Messer was charged with the loss after starting the first three innings for the Bulldogs.

Paynesville (3-2) will play Royalton in a doubleheader Thursday at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud.

A fourth-run sixth inning helped Litchfield break open its Wright County Conference West Division game at Rockford.

Bennett Lecher and Bauer Wahl each had two hits for the Dragons and Avery Liestman got the complete-game victory. Liestman struck out five, walked one and allowed eight hits and no earned runs.

Caleb Jans tossed a two-hitter to help Yellow Medicine East beat Dawson-Boyd at Dawson.

Jans struck out four, walked one and allowed one earned run over seven innings. He also went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI for the Sting. Cody Dahlager was 3-for-4 with a double and Nickson Knapper was 2-for-4 for YME.

Dusty Deuth and Codie Johnson each had hits for the Blackjacks.

Ayden Gustafson struck out nine in six innings for the Jaguars.

Dreyer Homan and Brooks Asche combined on a five-hitter to lead MACCRAY past Minneota at Raymond.

Homan struck out 10 and scattered five hits and three walks over six innings, allowing one earned run. Asche struck out two in a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save.

Brady Kienitz was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and two stolen bases for the Wolverines.

Kevin Kuefler had three hits and Matt Schmitz homered to help lead the Elrosa Saints past the host Greenwald Cubs in the Stearns County League opener on Sunday.
