Prep baseball roundup: Lakers tame Tigers

GLENWOOD -- Minnewaska helped erase six errors with a five-run fourth inning and the Lakers went on to an 11-8 win over Morris/Chokio-Alberta on Wednesday.

GLENWOOD - Minnewaska helped erase six errors with a five-run fourth inning and the Lakers went on to an 11-8 win over Morris/Chokio-Alberta on Wednesday.

Austin VerSteeg hit a two-run triple and Austin Ostrander followed with another triple to bring home VerSteeg in the game-changing fourth.

The Lakers improved to 9-4 in the West Central North and 9-8 overall.

Their victory lifted them into a tie with Montevideo and Sauk Centre for the North championship. Sauk Centre defeated Montevideo 7-6 on Wednesday.

Justin Amundson was 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI, and VerSteeg and Ostrander both were 2-for-3 with triples and doubles.

Hunter Thompson was 2-for-2 and also hit one of the Lakers’ four triples. Jon Nygaard and VerSteeg both drove in two runs.

MCA’s Bryce Jergenson was 3-for-5, and Noah Grove and Joey Dufault both were 2-for-4. All three Tigers drove in runs.

Matt Paulson allowed two earned runs and struck out four to get the win. Jayden Beecher earned a save, pitching three innings and allowing one earned run.

Sauk Centre 7, Montevideo 6

Sauk Centre scored three runs in the seventh inning to down Montevideo 7-6 on Wednesday and claim a share of the West Central North Conference title.

The Mainstreeters, Montevideo and Minnewaska tied for the title with 9-4 records.

Will Funk, Jake Haskamp, Billy Moritz and Tanner Schmiesing all had two hits for Sauk Centre, which is 9-7 overall. Daniel Schmiesing got the win in relief.

Montevideo’s Jeff Rohloff was 3-for-3.

YME 8, Dawson-Boyd 0

On a warm afternoon, Austin Vikander treated fans to an exquisite game, allowing just four hits while striking out 12 to lead the Sting to a victory in the play-in game of Section 3A on Wednesday.

The Sting of Yellow Medicine East play MACCRAY at 11 a.m. Saturday in Raymond.

The Sting’s Blake Lindstrom and Dylan Johnson both had two hits, and Johnson drove in two runs.

Derrick Grund also drove in a Sting run.

Dawson-Boyd’s Jordan Bothun had three of his team’s four hits.
