Prep Baseball Roundup: Willmar loses twice at New Prague Invite

NEW PRAGUE -- Buffalo jumped on Willmar right from the start, scoring three first-inning runs and wrapping up the 12-2 victory with a four-run sixth on Saturday.

In the Cardinals’ second game, New Prague broke open a tied game with a four-run seventh and defeated Willmar 6-2.

In the first game, Buffalo’s Andrew Iverson was 4-for-4 with a run batted in and two runs scored.

Josh Munoz and Eric Newman limited the Cardinals to two hits.

Willmar’s Cole Hagen and Noah Vreeman had the Cardinals hits, Vreeman and Tony McCleary drove in the team’s runs, which were scored by Tyler Stegeman and Josh Tinklenberg.


Against New Prague, Austin Smith was 2-for-2 with an RBI and McCleary also drove in a run.

Belle Plaine 10, Paynesville 9

Two Paynesville errors and four singles in the seventh inning rallied the host Tigers to an opening win Saturday.

Belle Plaine produced two runs in the top half of the first, but Paynesville sent up 11 batters to the plate in the bottom half of the frame to crank out six runs, aided by four Belle Plaine errors.


Nathan Schultz went 3-for-4, which including a two-run single in the first, and Colin Riley added a two-run double in the fifth for Paynesville. Josh Mackedanz threw four effective innings, striking out seven and surrendering five hits, but didn’t factor into the decision.

The Bulldogs manufactured three 5-run innings to pick up their third win in four tries this season.


Matthew Quade legged out a pair of two-run triples, one in the first and another in the fourth. Brandon Schleper and Jordon Roos had three hits apiece, while Blake Karsch and Nathan Schultz supplied another two each to back Schleper’s four-inning victory on the mound.

Schleper struck out six, didn’t give up an earned run and scattered five hits and three walks over the first four innings on the mound.

ACGC 13, Pillager 8


ACGC fell behind by three runs before getting its offense cranked up and the Falcons won their first game of the season, 13-8 over Pillager, at Dick Putz Field on Saturday.

Pillager head coach Jacob Mehr is a cousin of Falcons head coach Jeff Tanner.

ACGC’s Jordan Nelson was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI.

David Kinzler and Mitch Macik both had two hits and drove in runs, and Macik scored four times.

Nelson started and reliever Brody Larson earned the win, striking out five in three innings.

The Falcons (1-2) play next at Sauk Centre on Tuesday.

Eddie Estrada’s soft liner over second base drove in Jack Schultz with the winning run, capping Litchfield’s extra-inning comeback victory over Norwood Young America Saturday in Litchfield.

Litchfield scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to force extra frames but NYA scored twice in the eighth.

In the bottom of the eighth, Brandon Behnke doubles and pinch runner Cody Beavers later scored on Matt Hopkins’ ground out.

 With two outs, Sam Renner and Schultz reached on back-to-back singles, and Riley Johnson tied the game with a single to score Renner. Estrada followed with the game-winner.

Johnson was 3-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and run scored, and Brandon Behnke, Estrada, Braeden Wahl and Andy Schneider all had two hits for the Dragons.

The Dragons play the first of four schedule games this week, playing a makeup game against Spectrum at 5 p.m. today in Litchfield.
