Prep Baseball: Sweep gives Paynesville West Central South title

PAYNESVILLE -- The Paynesville Bulldogs swept Benson in a doubleheader Thursday to become the West Central South Conference champions with one conference game left in the season.

PAYNESVILLE -- The Paynesville Bulldogs swept Benson in a doubleheader Thursday to become the West Central South Conference champions with one conference game left in the season.

Paynesville was two games ahead of the pack for the conference title before sweeping the Braves.

The Bulldog pitching kept the Benson hitters off balance, allowing only six hits over 14 innings of play.

Aaron Savelkoul earned the win in game one and Jon Kerzman in the second.

Home runs by Jason Kampsen and Shane Kampsen vaulted the Paynesville offense to a four-run lead after four innings in game one.

A four-run lead in the first inning for the Bulldogs doubled before the end of seven in Thursday's finale.

Paynesville wins the conference with a 13-2 record with one game left to play before sections.

Game One

Payneville 5, Benson 1

Shane Kampsen hit a home run in the second inning along with a double for the Bulldogs.

Jason Kampsen hit a three-run shot in the bottom of the fourth inning to capitalize a three-hit game.

Luke Schwartz took the loss for Benson after six innings of service.

Eric Riley threw a three hitter and struck out 10 Thunder Hawks. He did not surrender an earned run.

Ryan Beyer jump-started the Tigers' offense and a three-run rally in the second inning with a lead-off home run.

Tyler Hansen cracked three hits for Morris.

Mitch Christensen drove in a run off a double for Montevideo.

YME 5, ACGC 4

Jordan Hagert's two-run single with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Yellow Medicine East (6-9, 7-10).

YME led 3-0 before ACGC plated three runs in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game.

The Falcons then took the lead when Trever Heining singled, stole second and scored on Kurtis Huisman's bloop single.

In the bottom of the seventh, YME's Dylan Hoffman singled to left field with one out and Travis Enger followed with a single up the middle. Derek Dyrdahl's infield single loaded the bases before Hagert singled between third and short.

Hoffman had three hits for the Sting. Enger, Dyrdal and Dustin Baker had two hits apiece.

Tanner went 4-for-5 for ACGC (7-8, 7-10). Heining and Travis Frederiksen had two hits apiece.

Dylan Lindstrom threw three innings of relief for the win, allowing seven hits and two runs.

Jordan Tanner absorbed the loss.

The Eagles (11-4, 13-6) exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to overtake Minnewaska.

Ryan Streich pitched three innings of hitless, scoreless relief of Baxter DuFrane for Lac qui Parle Valley's eighth straight win.

Singles by Colton Kamstrup and Stephen Enger, on a bunt, plus a walk to Cory Wildung, loaded the bases for LQPV in the sixth. Streich's sacrifice fly tied the score 3-3.

After Scott Bormann singled, a bases-loaded walk to DuFrane plated the go-ahead run. Jordan Schwarz later added an RBI single.

Trenton Berg and Cory Jackson walloped triples for the Lakers (6-8, 7-10).
