Prep Basketball: Sabres hold off Willmar down stretch

WILLMAR -- Willmar couldn't hang onto a six-point halftime advantage and fell to Sartell 57-50 in a Central Lakes Conference game on Friday at Willmar High School.

Sartell, now 10-2, trailed 28-22 at the break but limited the Cardinals (6-7) to 22 second-half points while the Sabres shook off early game rust and put up 35 points in the second half.

Willmar was within one point of the Sabres with 5:43 to play but Sartell outscored the Cardinals 10-4 from that point and Willmar didn't score again after Connor Stevens' bucket with 1:43 to play.

The Sabres' Thomas Gieske scored a game-high 21 points and Dominic Hagy scored 12 points and had seven rebounds. Luke Tillotson scored 10 points.

Willmar's Adnan Muhumed and Ryan Slette both scored 12 points and Drey Dirksen had 10 points. Slette had nine rebounds and Ty Roelofs finished with five points, eight rebounds and three steals.

Sartell is now 6-2 in the CLC, hanging around the top of the standings with St. Cloud Apollo, and Fergus Falls. Willmar dropped to 3-6 in the conference and is ahead of two one-win teams (Rocori and Sauk Rapids).

Emma Hanson and Mackenzie Rich each scored in double figures and the New London-Spicer defense held Dassel-Cokato to 18 points in both halves as the Wildcats cruised to a 62-36 Wright County Conference road win on Friday.

Hanson led NLS with 12 points along with seven rebounds and four steals while Mackenzie tallied 10 points and four assists. Ava Kramer chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds.

On Tuesday, the Wildcats return home to face Glencoe-Silver Lake.
