Prep Basketball: Wildcats need OT to edge Dragons

NEW LONDON -- With the top spot in the West division of the Wright County Conference on the line, New London-Spicer and Litchfield took their best shots throughout Thursday's game.

NEW LONDON - With the top spot in the West division of the Wright County Conference on the line, New London-Spicer and Litchfield took their best shots throughout Thursday's game.

It took overtime but NLS edged the Dragons 62-60 at New London-Spicer High School.

NLS improved to 13-3 while Litchfield dropped just its third game in 15 decisions.

Up 27-23 at half, the Dragons led by as many as 10 points in the second half before the Wildcats used a 10-2 run to take a 50-49 lead.

After NLS's Ander Arnold hit a 3-pointer to put his team up two in the final 20 seconds, Litchfield's Owen Boerema got a bucket in the lane in the waning seconds to force overtime.

In the extra period, Jonathan Kaelke got a steal and layup for a two-point NLS lead.

On Litchfield's final possession, Boerema put up a 3-pointer that missed and was rebounded by Pennertz, whose own 3-pointer in the corner was off-target.

Arnold finished with 18 points while Brandon Adelman had 20 points and seven assists for NLS. Kaelke chipped in with 10 points and four steals.

Alex Gruenke led Litchfield with 17 points while Boerema and Joe Pennertz both had 12.

NLS heads to Mound Westonka on Saturday while Litchfield has a non-conference home game with Zumbrota-Mazeppa.

A big second half helped BBE overcome an eight-point halftime deficit and defeat Paynesville in a Central Minnesota Conference game on Thursday in Brooten.

BBE's Evan Wiener scored 27 points and Dylan Meyer had 16 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

Paynesville's Corbin Froelich hit four 3-point shots and finished with 20 points. Grady Fuchs and Sam Oehrlein both scored 10 points.

In non-conference play Thursday, Benson built a 13-point lead in the first half and held on to beat Yellow Medicine East, 75-61.

Ben Peterson and Will Enderson both had 13 points for the Braves, with Enderson hauling in six rebounds and Peterson coming up with a trio of steals. Cole Hedman chipped in with 12 points.

The Sting lost despite a 25-point effort from Bennett Knapper. Kyle Chase had 15 points, followed by 10 from Jahrell Ishmon.

The Dragons already trailed by 10 points at halftime and couldn't get anything going offensively after that.

NLS' Emma Hanson scored 19 points and Mackenzie Rich scored 18. Ava Kraemer had 12 rebounds and Hanson had seven boards.

Litchfield's Maddy Shoultz finished with 14 points and Laney Huhner scored 10.
