Prep cross country: 4 from area in 6A qualify for state

NEW LONDON - Community Christian School senior Ben Burgett will be running in another Class A State Meet after winning the Section 6A boys race Thursday at Little Crow Country Club.
Burgett dug deep to win by four seconds, crossing the finish line in 16:20.59. Coming in second and third, respectively, were Andrew Zachman of team champ Holdingford and Tyler Johnson of runner-up St. Cloud Cathedral, two runners that beat Burgett earlier in the season on the same course.
Burgett is the only area runner from the section to qualify for the state meet, but sophomore teammate Josh Starr just missed out, finishing 10 seconds behind the eighth and last qualifying spot. The top eight finishers that aren’t part of the qualifying teams get a spot at the state meet.
However, three girls from the area advanced to the state meet which is Nov. 1 at St. Olaf College in Northfield. Freshman Savannah Aanerud was fifth and seventh-grader Maddie Carrington 13th for Morris Area, and Litchfield junior Jane Hulterstrum was 10th to earn state bibs.
Holdingford and St. Cloud Cathedral also finished 1-2 in the girls team standings.
