COLD SPRING - Freshman Heidi Schmitz placed third and Willmar put six runners in the top 13 to control the outcome of the Rocori Invitational girls 4,000-meter race on Thursday on the River Oaks course on the Sauk River.
The Cardinals totaled 37 points and runner-up Annandale 67.
Bethany Hasz, Alexandria senior, was way out front individually in a winning time of 18:16. Runner-up Liz Schlafke was next in 19:51 and then Schmitz in 19:58. Bethany Hasz was Class AA runner-up to her sister Megan in the 2014 state meet.
Leah Hansen in sixth, Courtney Hanson in seventh, Elsie Duininck in tenth and Savannah Anex in eleventh rounded out Willmar’s top five. Lydia Engle placed 13th. Willmar ran a young line-up with no seniors (Hasz was one of only two seniors in the top 20).
Missing five of their top eight, the Willmar boys finished well back. The Somali runners were out for Ramadan and another runner is injured.
Willmar senior Ian Thompson ran second in the boys race eight seconds back of first-place Tyler Moore (16:51) of Little Falls.
