DAWSON - A battle of two top Class A teams didn’t turn into the offensive circus many expected.
Dawson-Boyd’s Dalton Palmer scored the game’s only touchdowns on runs of 4 and 9 yards and the Blackjacks blanked previously undefeated Adrian 14-0 on Thursday night at R.B. Clay Field.
Both teams ended the evening 6-1 in the Little Sioux Conference and overall.
Adrian, which entered the game ranked No. 9 in Class A, was averaging 25 points per game. The Blackjacks, ranked No. 10 in Class A, was averaging 35 points per game.
But defense, at least on the Blackjacks’ side of the ball, was the story.
Dawson-Boyd limited Adrian to 95 total yards. The Blackjacks piled up 349 yards, with Palmer running 31 times for 193 yards.
But Dawson-Boyd kept breaking down in the Adrian end after embarking on promising drives. The Blackjacks were penalized nine times for 65 yards.
Palmer’s 4-yard score came after a Jess Hansen hit Eli Weber on a long pass play deep into the Dragons’ end.
Hansen hit 8 of 12 passes for 112 yards and Weber had two receptions for 60 yards.
Dawson-Boyd closes out its regular-season schedule at Tracy-Milroy-Balaton at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
