Prep Football: BOLD bombs Minneota in 5A title game

MARSHALL -- BOLD head coach Steve Solem has been in the game long enough to know that, no matter how good your team, any win could be your last when the postseason commences.

MARSHALL - BOLD head coach Steve Solem has been in the game long enough to know that, no matter how good your team, any win could be your last when the postseason commences.

So if Friday's 49-7 win over Minneota in the Section 5A championship game is the last for Solem as he prepares for retirement, he'd be hard-pressed to recall a more satisfying one among the 289 he's compiled in a 33-year career.

Solem's Warriors were in control from the first set of downs against the Vikings, with Warriors quarterback Jordan Sagedahl unleashing bomb after bomb on the Minneota secondary.

Sagedahl completed 11 of 13 passes for 286 yards and four touchdowns. Luke Ryan was on the receiving end of six of Sagedahl's throws for a staggering 239 yards -- 40 yards per reception -- and three touchdowns. He caught scoring passes of 34, 60 and 49 yards.

It was evident early that BOLD was going to snap the defending Class A state champion's 24-game winning streak.

BOLD built a 28-0 lead by halftime and needed just four plays to score on the opening drive of the second half. Another long pass play set up Tim Peppel's two-yard scoring plunge for a 35-0 lead just minutes into the third quarter. Sagedahl and Ryan hooked up on their third scoring play -- the 49-yarder in the third quarter -- to make in 42-0 before the usually explosive Vikings got on the scoreboard.

Then, BOLD's John Burman capped a solid defensive effort with a 20-yard interception return for his team's final TD. BOLD held Minneota to 183 yards (just 3.1 yards per play), and Sagedahl and Ryan both intercepted two passes. Meanwhile, BOLD piled up 413 yards running 13 fewer offensive plays than the Vikings.

The victory ends a run of BOLD futility against the Vikings. Minneota defeated BOLD in the Section 5AA semifinals in 2013, beat the Warriors in the 2015 Section 5A championship game, then handed BOLD its lone defeat last year, again in the 5A title game.

BOLD takes its 11-0 record into the Class A state tournament quarterfinals against Otter Tail Central, a 38-28 winner over Ada-Borup in Friday's Section 6A title game.

BOLD and Otter Tail play at noon Saturday, Nov. 10, in Alexandria.
