Prep football: LQPV stuns Dawson-Boyd in final seconds

MADISON - Chase Mortenson’s 14-yard touchdown pass to Connor Oie with 10 seconds left propelled Lac qui Parle Valley past Dawson-Boyd 27-26 on Thursday in a Southwest District game.
LQPV (2-1) controlled the majority of the first half by getting three scores. Lucas Strand had two short TD runs and Colton Struxness broke off a 40-yard run in the second quarter to give the Eagles a 21-6 lead.
Jess Hansen hooked up with Eli Weber for a 25-yard scoring strike in the first quarter and a 58-yard TD pass late in the second quarter. The visiting Blackjacks (2-1) gained control of the game in the third quarter when Hansen connected with Alex Swenson for a 20-yard score and LQPV conceded a safety.
The momentum spilled over into the fourth quarter for Dawson-Boyd as Hansen found the end zone from a yard out to give the Blackjacks a 26-21 lead.
Dawson-Boyd then did an onside kick, but the Eagles recovered the ball at midfield. Chase Mortenson proceeded to complete two passes to Tom Witte and another to Oie to put the ball deep in Dawson-Boyd territory.
Another Mortenson-Oie connection sealed the outcome as Oie outjumped the defense on the left side of the end zone to haul in a fade pass for the final TD of the night.
LQPV didn’t turn the ball over while Dawson-Boyd had four turnovers. Corey Ruggenbuck had a fumble recovery, seven tackles and a sack to ignite the Eagles’ defense.
LQPV had a balanced running game with Peyton Mortenson gaining 56 yards, Strand 51 and Struxness 46.
Hansen completed 15 of 37 passes for 224 yards while throwing two interceptions. Weber hauled in 10 catches that gained 144 yards.
LQPV is at Tracy-Milroy-Balaton and Dawson-Boyd hosts Minneota next Friday.
