MELROSE - Matthew Quade ran for 101 yards and accounted for 2 touchdowns, Troy Spates also scored twice while gaining another 91 yards on the ground, and the Paynesville defense held Melrose to under 200 yards of offense as the unbeaten Bulldogs clinched at least a tie for the West Central Conference title by blanking Melrose 32-0 Friday.

The Bulldogs (6-0, 6-0) can clinch the WCC title outright next Friday when they host Sauk Centre, one of four teams tied for second at 4-2.

Quade found paydirt from 58 yards out in the first quarter and capped the scoring by connecting with Nicholas Dingmann on a 24-yard completion. In between Spates scored from a yard out in the second quarter and rumbled 50 yards to put the Bulldogs up 24-0.

Paynesville committed 4 turnovers on offense - 3 on Quade interceptions - but its defense held Melrose (3-3, 3-3) to 11 first downs, 105 rushing yards and 85 passing yards while forcing 3 turnovers in its first shutout of the season.

The Bulldogs converted all four 2-point conversions and all were on the ground, one each from Quade, Spates, Dingmann and Bryce Savage.
