DANUBE - Renville County West is on a roll, just a few seasons removed from the possible folding of its program.
The Jaguars improved to 2-1 on Friday with a 35-12 victory over Cleveland in a Southern Confederacy Conference game.
Alex Villarreal ran for the game’s first touchdown and also caught two scoring passes from quarterback Hayden Johnson.
Johnson led the Jaguars with 105 rushing yards and he also connected on 18 of 36 passes for 208 yards and four touchdowns.
Colin Thompson caught two TD passes and also intercepted a first-quarter pass that led to Villarreal’s TD run.
The Jags broke the game open with a 21-point second quarter.
“There were a lot of ups and downs in the game,” said Jaguars head coach Ryan Hebrink. “We had the lead but we could never create separation. But our guys stuck with it and rallied around.”
The Jaguars travel to play Heron Lake-Okabena at 7 p.m. Friday. Cleveland, which fell to 2-1, defeated HLO 50-0 in the second week of the season.

Wright County
HF Catholic 26, NLS 16
Chazz Johnson rushed for 167 yards and 3 touchdowns to help Holy Family Catholic outlast Class AAA No. 1 New London-Spicer 26-16 in a battle of unbeaten Wright County Conference teams Friday.
Shane Zylstra also went over the 100-yard mark (103 on 9 carries) on the ground to collect a pair of touchdowns for the Wildcats, but those were the only points NLS would get. It was the first NLS setback since it fell 48-44 in the state title game last year.
Zylstra scored on a 5-yard run late in the first quarter to give NLS a quick lead and the senior scampered 60 yards near the end of the third quarter to put the Wildcats back in front at 16-7. But a TD pass just 48 seconds later gave the Fire, a Class AAAA program, momentum entering the final quarter.
Johnson scored on runs covering 22 and 17 yards in a five-minute span in the fourth to pull the Fire (3-0) ahead.
NLS (2-1) was held to 205 yards on offense - 188 came from the ground - and turned the ball over three times while committing 9 penalties that marched off 80 yards. The Fire, meanwhile, were able to manufacture 194 rushing yards and another 180 yards through the air while not committing a turnover. Defensively for NLS, Noah Welsh had 2½ sacks and Brandon Knisley 1½.
The Wildcats have another tough test next week as they host Glencoe-Silver Lake, which lost 47-0 to Hutchinson on Friday.
