Prep football roundup: Wildcats edge Litchfield

LITCHFIELD -- In a game filled with big plays, New London-Spicer made just a couple more than Litchfield and the Wildcats downed the Dragons 27-21 on Friday.

LITCHFIELD - In a game filled with big plays, New London-Spicer made just a couple more than Litchfield and the Wildcats downed the Dragons 27-21 on Friday.
NLS’ Shane Zylstra was his team’s catalyst, taking a Ethan Bohlsen pass 91 yards for a second-quarter touchdown, and he returned a punt 68 yards for a fourth-quarter score. He scored the game-winning touchdown on a 26-yard run in the final quarter.
James Magnuson knotted the game on a 58-yard pass from Bohlsen in the first quarter.
Litchfield quarterback Josh Prahl helped keep the game close, throwing for 212 yards and touchdowns to Jared Pedersen and 42 yards to Cody Beavers. Prahl also ran one yard for the game’s first touchdown.
Litchfield remains at home to take on Glencoe-Silver Lake at 7 p.m. Friday.

Minneota 33, Dawson-Boyd 21
DAWSON - Minneota set the tone early Friday when Andrew Behnke took the opening kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown and the No. 3-ranked Vikings also held area-rushing leader Dalton Palmer to 29 yards as they tripped up No. 2 Dawson-Boyd 33-21 in a Little Sioux Conference game.
Both teams were unbeaten and combined to outscore their opponents 441-62 entering the game, but Minneota (5-0, 5-0) held a potent Dawson-Boyd running game to 51 yards. Palmer had run for 806 yards in the first four games this season.
Palmer did score his area-high 12th touchdown in the first quarter to give the Blackjacks a 7-6 lead, but Minneota then scored 14 unanswered points to take a 20-7 lead at halftime.
Garrett Hennen gained 214 of the Vikings’ 333 yards on the ground and also scored twice. Cole Hennen also scored twice and ran for another 61 yards.
Jess Hansen completed 12 of 19 passes for 191 yards and fired a 10-yard scoring strike to Michael Lee in the third quarter for Dawson-Boyd. Lee caught seven other passes to finish with 152 yards.
Dawson-Boyd’s Christian Thoen scored on a 1-yard run to cap the scoring. The Blackjacks are at Canby next Friday.

Melrose scored three times in the first quarter to build a 20-6 lead it wouldn’t relinquish.
Zach Pierskalla ran five yards in for the first score, and Blake Gerads pulled in a 13-yard pass from Tyler Braegelmann five minutes later.
Then, with 13 seconds left in the quarter, Braegelmann connected with Matthew Beste on a 15-yard TD.
The Falcons clawed their way back with short TD runs from Cullen Hoffman in the second quarter and Brett Busskohl in the fourth.
Busskohl also scored in the first, and finished with 27 rushing yards.
Beau Anderson led the Falcons’ ground attack, with 96 of ACGC’s 256 rushing yards, and quarterback Derek Dengerud ran for 85 while passing for 45.

Montevideo 14, Minnewaska 12
Markus Kranz and Montevideo ran over Minnewaska as the Thunder Hawks chewed up 292 yards on the ground on 59 carries. Kranz led the ground attack with 247 yards on 40 totes and also posted the go-ahead touchdown with a 24-yard scamper in the third quarter. The senior was also involved in a team-high 12 tackles.
The Thunder Hawks (4-1, 4-1) scored first when Preston Herfurth ran in from 12 yards out in the first quarter. But the visiting Lakers (3-2, 3-2) got a 1-yard TD run from Greg Helander and a 23-yard scoring strike from a Michael Gruber-Austin VerSteeg connection to take a 12-7 lead just after halftime.
Hever Valenzuela connected on both extra-point kicks for Montevideo while the Lakers failed on both of their two-point conversions.
The Montevideo defense limited Minnewaska to 171 yards of offense and 8 first downs. VerSteeg ended up hauling in four Gruber completions for 70 yards.
Montevideo (4-1, 4-1) heads north to Melrose (3-2, 3-2) next Friday while Minnewaska (3-2, 3-2) is at conference front-runner Paynesville (5-0, 5-0).

Quarterback Matthew Quade connected with Nick Reiman for three touchdowns and Paynesville remained undefeated with a road win on Friday.
Reiman caught scoring passes of 38, 61 and 4 yards, and Quade, in addition to running for a touchdown, also hit Brandon Schleper for a 41-yard TD.
Alex Kranz returned the second-half opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and he also ran one yard for another TD. Bryce Savage ran four yards for the game’s first touchdown.
Quade hit 20 of 34 throws for 342 yards, and Reiman made seven catches for 148 yards.

Renville County West got on the board first when Colin Thompson took the opening kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown, but it was all Edgerton/ Ellsworth after that.
The Flying Dutchmen piled up 508 total yards and defeated the Jaguars in a Southern Confederacy Conference win Friday in Danube.
RCW’s Hayden Johnson threw for 130 yards and ran for 89, and he completed a flea-flicker that went for a 57 Alex Villareal TD in the fourth quarter. The Jaguars’ Leon Ziegler kicked a 33-yard field goal and connected on both his conversion attempts.
The Jaguars travel to play Westbrook-Walnut Grove at 7 p.m. Friday.

Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg broke a 14-game losing streak and earned second-year head coach Eric Kauffmann’s first Saints victory on Friday night in Barrett.
Zach Carlson’s 56-yard touchdown run in the second quarter proved to be the winning points.
Carlson carried 25 times for 168 yards and Rylan Hatlestad ran 10 yards for the Saints’ first TD and he also intercepted a pass.
David Gordon iced the game in the fourth quarter, returning an interception 12 yards for a score.
The Saints, now 1-4, plays Browerville at 7 p.m. Friday in Murdock.
