Prep Football: Top-ranked Hutchinson stops Willmar

Tigers scored 28 second-half points in 42-14 win over Cardinals

HUTCHINSON — The Willmar football team played the state’s top-ranked team tough for a half.

But then came the final 24 minutes.

Hutchinson, No. 1-ranked in Class AAAA, scored 28 second-half points to beat No. 9 Willmar 42-14 on Friday night at S.R. Knutson Field

The Cardinals (1-1) opened the scoring. Michael Price scored on a 77-yard screen pass from Alex Schramm with 20 seconds left in the first quarter. LaBlue Moo’s PAT kick made it 7-0 Willmar.

Hutchinson quickly tied it up. Mitchell Piehl picked off a pass for the Tigers and ran it back 98 yards for a touchdown. Levi Teetz’s two-point conversion run gave Hutchinson an 8-7 lead.

The Tigers made it 14-7 when Teetz scored the first of three rushing touchdowns.

Late in the second quarter, Schramm found Cade Roelofs wide open for a 45-yard touchdown pass. Moo’s PAT made it 14-14 going into halftime.

In the second half, Teetzel had two more touchdown runs and Hutch quarterback Colin Nagel hit Charlie Renner for a 14-yard touchdown pass on a fourth-and-goal midway through the third quarter.

Hutchinson (3-0) scored three TDs in the fourth quarter to put it away and earn a bit of revenge for Willmar’s 28-24 upset of the Tigers in 2020.

The Tigers piled up 356 yards on 53 plays, including 273 rushing on 45 carries. Teetzel led the way, rushing 18 times for 169 yards and three TDs.

Willmar has its home-opener at 7 p.m. next Friday. The Cardinals are host to Big Lake at Hodapp Field. Big Lake (0-1) played St. Cloud Apollo (0-2) on Friday.
