Prep Football: Willmar survives opener at Apollo

Cardinals rally twice from deficits to win 19-18

ST. CLOUD — The Willmar football team hung on to beat St. Cloud Apollo 19-18 Friday night at Michie Field.

It was Apollo’s second game of the season and Willmar’s season-opener.

Apollo had a zero-week game, losing to Hutchinson 44-6 last Friday. Willmar’s next game is at 7 p.m. Friday at Hutchinson.

Apollo scored on its first possession and led 12-0 early in the second quarter before the Cardinals got on the board twice to take a 13-12 halftime advantage.

The Eagles then scored right away in the third quarter to go up 18-13.

Willmar’s Brandt Sunder then caught a 48-yard pass from Alex Schramm to put the Cardinals up 19-18.

Apollo had 67 plays for 365 yards, led by quarterback Andrew Karls, who completed 23 of 33 passes for 282 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Karls also ran for a TD.

Schramm completed 11 of 20 passes for 166 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Michael Price had a 29-yard reception from Schramm for a score and also ran in a TD from eight yards out.
