Prep Girls Basketball Roundup: Big first half lifts New London-Spicer over Delano

Wildcats go on a 32-5 run to beat host Tigers 56-36

DELANO — The New London-Spicer girls basketball team wrapped up a rugged first week with a win that included a fabulous first-half run Friday night.

The Wildcats beat Delano 56-36.

The teams were tied 11-11 midway through the first half. NLS then closed the half by going on a 32-5 run. The Wildcats closed the half by making 8 of 10 from 3-point range.

“It was an unbelievable six-eight minutes,” NLS assistant coach Joey Dreier said. “Those last six-eight minutes was a crazy, fun time.”

The victory was NLS’ third in four days. The Wildcats beat West Central Area on Tuesday then defeated Sauk Centre on Thursday.

NLS next plays Tuesday at Morris/Chokio-Alberta.

Against Delano, Avery Rich had 15 points, four assists and three steals. Jaden Coahran added 14 points and three assists and Dakota Rich added 11 points and two steals. Izzy Schmiesing had eight rebounds and two assists.

Abby Berge had 37 points to lead Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa past Pine River-Backus at Pine River.

Berge also had seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Berge made 13 of 18 shots from the field, including 8 of 13 from 3-point range. The Jaguars shot 60 percent (30 of 50) from the field.

BBE plays Holdingford at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Belgrade in a Central Minnesota Conference game.

AVery Koenen had 20 points, Tenley Epema 15 and Hailey Dirksen 12 in Montevideo’s victory over the Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks at Montevideo.

The Thunder Hawks led 48-4 at halftime.

MACCRAY advanced to the finals of the Case IH tournament after beating host Benson .

Leading 18-11 at halftime, the Wolverines outscored the Braves in the second half, 22-9.

Ella Bourne paced MACCRAY with 14 points, followed by eight from Brielle Janssen.

Madilyn Wrobleski was Benson’s top scorer with nine points.

Earlier in the night, Hancock beat Browerville 68-45.

The Braves and Tigers will play in the third-place game at noon Saturday, followed by the Wolverines and Owls in the Case IH championship at 2 p.m. back in Benson.
