WILLMAR — For the first time in four years, the Willmar girls soccer team notched a 2-1 victory over Alexandria on Tuesday.

The loss was Alexandria’s first. Alex is now 5-1.

“The seniors on this team have craved a victory over (their) rivals, so earning that victory was fantastic,” Willmar coach Amanda Broman said. “We have a large senior class so this win meant a lot to them. And sharing it with a large fan base at the game, just awesome.”

After scoring three goals for Willmar on Monday, Ellary Lange scored both of Willmar’s goals on Tuesday, narrowly missing back-to-back hat tricks.

Willmar got a goal by Lange in the sixth minute with an assist by Feranda Ossa Letelier.

“We came into that game with hunger and I think with the first goal we built a lot of confidence and it just continued to build up throughout the rest of the night,” Broman said.

Lange scored her second goal at the 58th minute on an assist by Sam Christoffer, giving Willmar a 2-0 lead.

Alexandria’s Kylee James scored on a penalty kick in the 67th minute.

Broman believes Tuesday’s victory is a turning point for Willmar.

“It's been a great start for our season,” Broman said. “We are continuously finding our confidence and footing and I’m very excited for where we can go from here.”

Willmar plays the Brainerd Warriors at 7 p.m. Thursday in Brainerd.
