Prep Golf: Fine tune-up for New London-Spicer boys

Wildcats earn team title at Willmar Invitational

WILLMAR — In one last tune-up before next week’s section tournament, the New London-Spicer boys golf team shined at Friday’s Willmar Invitational.

With four golfers finishing in the top six at Eagle Creek Golf Club, the Wildcats won the team title with a score of 312. Community Christian School of Willmar (326), Hutchinson (335), Fergus Falls (336) and Willmar (342) rounded out the top five in the seven-team tournament.

Leading NLS’ efforts was Peyton Coahran, who finished second with a 4-over par 76. Noah Dietz (77) was third; Blake Kath (79) was fifth; and Nixon Harrier (80) was tied for sixth.

NLS, along with seventh-place Litchfield (352), competes in Section 3AA. Postseason play starts Thursday at Oakdale Golf Club in Buffalo Lake.

Taking medalist honors was CCS’ Brett Reid, who carded an even-par round of 72. After shooting 1-over on the front nine, Reid bogeyed on No. 10 before scoring three straight birdies and scoring 1-under on the back.

The Eagles’ Nathan Davis placed in the top 10, finishing in a tie for ninth with an 81.

CCS, the 2019 Class A state champion, opens the Section 4A tournament Tuesday at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker.

For the host Cardinals, Joey Wisocki led the squad with a fourth-place score of 78, followed by an 83 from Nathan Marthaler, good for a tie in 13th place.

Willmar and the rest of Section 8AAA begin the postseason on Tuesday, June 1 at Rich-Spring Golf Course in Cold Spring.

Sam Tipka was Litchfield’s top golfer, tying for sixth with an 80.
