Prep Playoff Basketball: Card girls reach 5AAA championship game

BUFFALO -- Willmar pulled away in the second half after being deadlocked at halftime and defeated St. Cloud Apollo 54-44 in the Section 5AAA semifinals on Saturday.

BUFFALO - Willmar pulled away in the second half after being deadlocked at halftime and defeated St. Cloud Apollo 54-44 in the Section 5AAA semifinals on Saturday.

The Cardinals will play for a spot in the Class AAA state tournament against Becker at 7 p.m. Thursday in Buffalo. Willmar defeated Becker 69-63 in the season-opener on Nov. 27 in Becker.

Against Apollo, Willmar's Madi Linbo scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds, and Carly Wedel notched a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds and she also had six steals.

The Cardinals' Sadie Raitz and Katelyn Murphy both scored seven points and Abby Berskow and Mackenzie Jones both scored six.

Zach Durfee was unconscious from deep, canning six of his eight 3-point efforts. He finished the game with 23 points and 10 rebounds to power the Blackjacks.

Austin TeBrake led the Bluejays with 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and five steals.

Backlund, Revier at nationals

Ridgewater wrestler Jacob Backlund won two of four matches at 165 pounds at the NJCAA Wrestling National Championships on Sunday at Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Backlund won his openers but fell to eventual champion Michael Foy of Harper in the quarterfinals.

The Warriors' Jacob Revier competed at the national meet and lost both his matches at 157 pounds.
