Despite having an 8-0 victory last week, Willmar coach Jeffrey Winter hoped to see some improvements from the Cardinals’ boys soccer team against Princeton on Saturday.

Willmar earned a 3-1 victory over the Tigers. Winter was happy with his team’s overall performance.

“It was a real back-and-forth game early on. But we battled throughout,” Winter said.

Willmar took an early lead when striker Jairon Martinez Coto scored on an assist by Abdullahi Mohamud in the third minute of play.

The Cardinals extended its lead with a goal by Diego Gonzalez with an assist by Anthony Reyes Jimenez in the 37th minute.

Mohamud scored Willmar’s third and final goal in the 49th minute, assisted by Jemil Osman.

Princeton scored its lone goal in the 55th minute by Cooper Nowak.

“I think we let them in a little after we got up 3-0,” Winter said. “But tt was a great team defensive performance and great crowd support.”

Willmar competes next on the road against Rocori at 5:30 p.m. on Monday in Rocori.
