Prep Soccer Roundup: Willmar rallies to beat Hutchinson/GSL

Cardinals down Tigers, 4-2

GLENCOE — The Willmar girls soccer team came back in both the first and second halves to beat Hutchinson/Glencoe-Silver Lake 4-2 Monday at GSL High School.

The victory was the Cardinals’ first against a Section 6AA opponent this season.

“We were able to find our footing after a two-game skid and play with some confidence,” said Willmar head coach Amanda Broman.

The Tigers got on the board early with a goal in the eighth minute from Ellie Ketcher. The Cardinals tied it up near the end of the first half as Keianna Hillenbrandt tallied a goal in the 37th minute off an assist from Ella Shinn.

Tied 1-1 at the break, the Tigers got the lead again when Ketcher got her second score of the game at the 48th minute.

Shinn would have a hand in tying the game once again for the Cardinals. In the 61st minute, Shinn got the ball past goalkeeper Miranda Litzau to tie the match at 2-2. Ellary Lange was credited with the assist.

“We had a lot of offense generated from our center back, Ella Shinn,” Broman said. “She was able to get the ball rolling for us. She put the team on her back and picked us up tonight.”

Six minutes later, Fernanda Ossa Letelier scored the game-winning goal, with an assist credited to Sam Poe. Then in the final minute, Sam Christoffer tacked on an insurance goal.

“After we got a couple in the net, we played with some comfort and confidence,” Broman said.

Willmar (8-4-2) plays another section opponent on Tuesday, hosting Becker at 5 p.m. at Hodapp Field. The game is the Cardinals’ regular-season home finale.
