WILLMAR - Willmar goalie Zachary Courtney got his first varsity start for the Cardinals boys soccer team but it was a lonely experience.
The Cardinals peppered 20 shots at Courtney’s contemporary, Hutchinson keeper Cameron Barrall while Courtney didn’t face any in Willmar’s 10-0 victory Saturday at the Kennedy School pitch.
“After a disappointing loss on Thursday to former section rival Mankato West, our players regrouped and discussed where they want this season to go,” said Willmar head coach Jeff Winter. “They worked through a dedicated practice on Friday and took their frustrations out on Hutchinson.”
David Gomez and Jesus Nevarez both scored two goals and also had two assists.
Ben Gonzalez, Ricarod Contreras, Gerson Maldonado, Jesse Lopez, Blake Hisken and Sakawe Shadoor also scored goals.

Willmar’s Hannah Bollig scored in the 29th minute to tie the Cardinals’ match at Hutchinson, but the Tigers took control after that and won 6-1 on Saturday at Hutchinson.
Bollig scored on an assist from Hannah Johnson after Hutch’s Grace Penke scored the game’s first goal.
But Penke scored her second goal just two minutes later to help Hutch retake the lead, and Chrissy Dennison followed with three goals.
The Cardinals, now 1-5-1, travel to play Rocori at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Cold Spring.
