Top-seeded Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg weathered a pair of close games in Montevideo to advance to the Section 3A bracket semifinals Tuesday.

The Fighting Saints held off upset-minded Wheaton 5-2 in its opener, then disposed of Chokio-Alberta/Herman-Norcross 3-1 in the second round.

KMS will now play Murray County Central at 11 a.m. Saturday in Raymond. Wabasso and Morris meet in the other winner's bracket game, also at 11 a.m.

Morris also went 2-0 on the first day, beating Dawson-Boyd 8-1 and MACCRAY 8-4.

MACCRAY won its opener, 12-5 over Clinton-Graceville/Beardsley.

Moranda Zimmer belted a solo homer in the third inning and Brandi Bodin, Ashley Forstrom and Caylee Hagemeyer drove in two runs each for the Wolverines.

Alicia Koenen went the distance and allowed 10 hits and four earned runs for the win. She walked none and struck out seven.

Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg led 4-0 after three before Haley Doll drove in two runs for Wheaton on a single down the right-field line.

Sam Dunn brushed that off to finish with a four-hitter as the temperature hit 99 degrees in Montevideo. She walked one and fanned 10.

Amy Neal tripled in the sixth leading off but was stranded. Nikki Petersen went 2-for-2 and Briana Baker singled and had two RBI.

Renville County West pinch-hitter Alyssa Davis hit a bases-clearing double in the top of the fifth to pull the Jaguars within a run of the lead, 5-4.

But Chokio-Alberta/Herman-Norcross answered with three runs, scoring on a windblown fly to deep left in the bottom of the sixth.

Nicole Gillespie led the Spartans (13-9) with two doubles and a triple to drive in three runs.

RCW's No. 9 hitter Madison Schaub went 2-for-2 and scored the Jaguars' first run in the third.

Kelsey Amundson pitched a one-hitter for the Tigers, striking out four and walking four.

Sara Beyer and Mary Rentz had two hits each to lead Morris.

Morris led 3-1 before erupting for five runs in the fifth inning.

Mariah Kuhlman had the only hit for Dawson-Boyd.

Mackenzie Weatherly picked up the complete-game win. She was touched for 12 hits and two earned runs, while walking two and fanning six.
