BENSON — The Benson softball team has some work to do in hopes of reaching the Section 6A championship game.

The top seed in the South sub-section, Benson opened with a 7-6 win against No. 5 West Central Area. In the second game, third-seeded Hancock emerged a 6-2 winner, knocking Benson into the elimination bracket.

“We were just flat hitting,” Benson head coach Barb Schwarz said. “We just couldn’t get anything going. It just seemed we were trying, trying, trying and nothing was happening.”

The Owls won their first game of the day against No. 2 Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley, 12-3.

The Braves will try to keep their season alive against Parkers Prairie at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Browerville. The winner will take on the winner of New York Mills and C-G-B.

In the first game against the Knights, the Braves trailed 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth until Ellie Moesenthin cracked a two-out grand slam to put her team up for good. Moesenthin finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two stolen bases. Sarah Brandt was 1-for-3 with a run while Rachel Berens finished 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Bella Wolter got the complete-game victory.

In the second game, Hancock built a 6-0 lead after four innings. Rylee Hanson was 1-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Karleigh Rohloff finished 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, and Alexa Meierding went 2-for-4 with a run. Gabi Joos was the winning pitcher, striking out three over seven innings.

For the host Braves, Moesenthin was 1-for-4 with an RBI, and Sarah Brandt went 1-for-2 with a double and a walk. Zoe Doscher and Wolter each scored in the loss.

“They (the Owls) strung together a few hits and we did have some errors mixed in,” Schwarz said.

Schwarz had a simple message to your team.

“I pretty much tell ‘em I’m not ready to be done,” she said. “But I don’t play the game. Find a way to get yourselves ready, have some better at-bats. We’ll see what they bring. I can coach and can have good practices but I ultimately don’t play. They have to get themselves ready to play.”
