Prep Softball Roundup: Dawson-Boyd sweeps RTR to improve to 7-0

DAWSON -- Dawson-Boyd is off to 7-0 start for the first time in memory as the Blackjacks swept Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 20-3 and 9-5 in a Camden Conference doubleheader Tuesday.

DAWSON - Dawson-Boyd is off to 7-0 start for the first time in memory as the Blackjacks swept Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 20-3 and 9-5 in a Camden Conference doubleheader Tuesday.

Justine Flattum had four hits and Andrea Lee three, including a home run, in the first game, which saw the Blackjacks take a 15-0 lead after two innings.

Sadie Zaiser threw a five-inning four-hitter for the win, striking out five without issuing a walk.

Lee also homered in Game 2 as Dawson-Boyd used another fast start to remain unbeaten.

Sydney Giese pitched the first four innings for the win.

Cassidy Fransen suffered a difficult loss, allowing just two unearned runs and striking out five.

Alison Krieger struck out eight and gave up just one hit and one walk to get the opening win that featured 16 hits from the visiting Fighting Saints.

A combined 19 batters dug themselves into the batter’s box in the second and third innings for the Fighting Saints as they scored 12 runs.

Krieger, Sam Gjerde, Kalli Forsell and MiKaylie Hagen had three hits each for KMS.

A 3-0 KMS lead quickly expanded to 11-0 after the Fighting Saints batted 13 times in an eight-run fourth. A bases-clearing triple smacked by Sam Gjerde and an RBI double from Kalli Forsell highlighted the frame.

Gjerde also spun a victory in the pitcher’s circle as she fanned six without issuing a walk or an earned run and scattering four hits.

A 7-2 lead after four innings expanded to 13-2 after Paynesville sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth to manufacture six runs. Highlighting what proved to be the 10-run rule-invoking inning was a two-run double from Allie Stanger and Brooke Hemmesch’s two-run single.

Hemmesch also had a two-run single in the fourth to help back Kayla Schaefer’s complete-game victory, which featured eight strikeouts and only one walk.

The Falcons got an RBI double from Kim Swenson in the fourth and RBI singles from Mickena Inselman in the second and Jacey Nelson in the fifth.

Montevideo’s Kiersti Grey scattered eight hits and the Thunder Hawks edged Minnewaska in a West Central Conference game Tuesday in Glenwood.

Grey allowed two earned runs and walked two. Mady Phillips pitched a strong game, allowing just two earned runs while striking out five.

Monte’s Jessie Janisch hit a solo home run in the third inning, Kelsey Olson was 2-for-4 and drove in two runs, and Ashley Hoehne was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The Lakers’ Kacia Kollman drove in two runs and Shanae Suchy had a double among her two hits.

The Lakers fell to 5-3 overall and they play at Melrose at 5 p.m. Friday.

Trailing by a run entering their final at bat, the Morris/Chokio-Alberta softball team rallied with an eight-run seventh inning to overcome the Dutchmen on Tuesday.

Lauren Reimers was 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI, and Abbie Olson and Becca Holland both had two hits. Holland drove in two runs and Olson one, and Brooke Johnson singled in two runs.

The Tigers are 4-1 overall and play at Sauk Centre at 5 p.m. Thursday.
