Prep Softball Roundup: Lakers nearly upset, Paynesville cruises in Section 6AA-West

While its West Central Conference rival sweated it out, No. 2 Paynesville drubbed Staples-Motley 19-3 in five innings Tuesday to also advance to the semifinals.

Minnewaska will take on No. 5 Sauk Centre and Paynesville plays No. 3 Osakis in the semifinals today at 3:30 p.m. at Minnewaska High School in Glenwood. The Lakers and Mainstreeters split a doubleheader earlier in the season, while Paynesville beat Osakis 7-1 on April 27.

Minnewaska 3, Wadena-DC 1

Morgan Hess tossed seven strong innings, allowing one earned run and five hits as Minnewaska survived Wadena-Deer Creek’s upset bid in the Section 6AA-West opener on Tuesday in Glenwood.

The No. 8-seeded Wolverines scored in the first inning and maintained the lead until the Lakers tied the game in the fourth. Minnewaska then scored twice in the sixth to take control and give Hess the support she needed to earn her first postseason win.

Morgan Majerus was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Bayley Pooler scored two runs for the Lakers.

Paynesville 19, Staples-Motley 3

Kayla Schaefer hit a three-run home run and also picked up the win as Paynesville knocked off Staples-Motley in the opening round of the Section 6AA-West playoffs on Tuesday in Paynesville.

Allie Stanger was 3-for-3, drove in two runs and scored three, Ashley Eisenbrun doubled in two runs and Hannah Lange was 3-for-3 and scored three runs.

Eden Valley-Watkins’ Brooke Stang drove in four runs, including a two-run homer in the fourth inning, to bounce Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City from the Section 5A winners’ bracket.
