Prep softball roundup: Monte holds off Benson/Hancock

BENSON -- The Montevideo softball team scored two insurance runs in the top of the seventh and held off a Benson/Hancock rally in its final at-bat to defeat the BraveOwls 6-5 on Friday.

BENSON - The Montevideo softball team scored two insurance runs in the top of the seventh and held off a Benson/Hancock rally in its final at-bat to defeat the BraveOwls 6-5 on Friday.

It was the Thunder Hawks’ first game of the season while Benson/

Hancock dropped to 0-2.

Montevideo plays next against Marshall at 5 p.m. Monday in Montevideo.

The T-Hawks scored three runs in the third inning and led 4-3 heading into the final inning. They scored twice to go up 6-3.


But B/H answered with two in the bottom of the seventh inning and were threatening with two outs when Monte shortstop Jesse Janisch put away a line drive with BraveOwl runners on first and second.

Kiersti Grey worked all seven innings to earn the win.

Kelsey Quigley and Kelsey Olson both had hits and both drove in two runs.

B/H’s Shaleah Schmidt had a hit in three trips and she drove in two runs.

Minnewaska 6, YME 3

Minnewaska junior Mady Phillips threw all 7 innings with 8 strikeouts for the win and 1 walk. Senior Allie Trudel also went 7 with 6 whiffs and two walks. It was the opener for Yellow Medicine East.


Over the next two weeks the Sting have scheduled seven playing dates Monday through Friday with three of those doubleheaders, a total of 10 games.

It was the head coaching debut for Jen Sneller, who has coached the Sting JV the pass seven springs.

Alyssa Engfer doubled twice and singled for Minnewaska (3-0).

Maple Lake 13,

Litchfield 0

Hailey Horstmann doubled and Kelsey Fisher singled to lead off the fourth innings for Litchfield, but both were stranded as Maple Lake blanked the Dragons in their season opener.

Fisher also tripled in the second as Maple Lake outhit Litchfield 13-3. Kennedy Haney worked all five innings in the pitcher’s circle to earn the shutout victory.

Melrose 3

The Paynesville softball team jumped on Melrose early and cruised to victory in five innings on Friday in Paynesville.

Sam Dahl homered, drive in two runs and scored twice and Bri Stang had two hits and an RBI for the Bulldogs.

Paynesville’s Brooke Wuertz also doubled in two runs and scored once.

Megan Schaefer allowed just one hit and struck out five over three innings to earn the win.

The Bulldogs travel to Ada today to play Frazee at noon and Norman County at 2 p.m.
