Prep softball roundup: Morris/CA, Monte split doubleheader

MONTEVIDEO -- Montevideo rallied in its final at bat to win game one against Morris/Chokio-Alberta, but the Tigers rebounded themselves, winning game two to earn a split of the West Central South Conference doubleheader on Tuesday.

MONTEVIDEO - Montevideo rallied in its final at bat to win game one against Morris/Chokio-Alberta, but the Tigers rebounded themselves, winning game two to earn a split of the West Central South Conference doubleheader on Tuesday.

Paige Jorgenson singled home the winning run in game one, capping a Thunder Hawks rally the ended in a 4-3 victory.

In game two, the home-team Tigers scored in every inning but the fifth and won 9-7.

In game one, trailing 3-1, Montevideo’s Jessie Janisch was hit by a pitch with one out and scored on Ashley Hoehne’s triple. Kelsey Quigley tied the game, driving in Hoehne, with a single, and Quigley later scored with winning run on Jorgenson’s two-out single.

 In game two, MCA’s Abby Olson was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs. Becca Holland had two hits and scored two runs and Nicole Strobel had two hits and drove in a run.

The ThunderHawks are 9-5 overall and they play at doubleheader at Yellow Medicine East in Granite Falls at 4 p.m. Friday.

Paynesville 17, BOLD 1

Paynesville completed an undefeated regular season taking a pair from West Central South rival BOLD on a hot and windy Tuesday 17-1 and 11-2.

That brings their record to 15-0 with section seeding this evening.

Coach Tim Woehler said he was told it is the first time Paynesville softball has posted an undefeated regular season.

Megan Schaefer was the winner in Game 1 and younger sister Kayla Schaefer in Game 2.

Kayla Jones allowed five hits and struck out eight to earn the pitching win and she also doubled in a run in the BraveOwls’ West Central South Conference win.

Krista Motzko was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Britt Kurkosky also had a double among her two hits.

Katie Peterson and Jacey Nelson drove in ACGC’s runs.

The Falcons are 5-3 in the league and 9-5 overall. They are the No. 2 seed in the upcoming 5A West Subsection playoffs and play host to No. 7-seed Upsala at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

The Lakers needed only six hits to score six earned runs as Melrose committed five errors and issued six walks.

Winning pitcher Madison Phillips and Allyssa Engfer drove in two runs each for the Lakers, who batted 12 in a six-run fourth. In the pitcher’s circle, Phillips fanned three without walking a batter and gave up five hits.

Another rout earned Minnewaska its first outright conference title since 2010. The Lakers shared the conference crown with Albany last year.

A 3-1 game through four innings in Minnewaska’s favor quickly turned ugly for Melrose as the Lakers (7-1, 12-4) sent up 19 batters in the fifth and sixth to score five runs in both frames.

Minnewaska churned out 14 hits with Lexi Amundson supplying three of them to knock in two runs. Allyssa Engfer, Kacia Kollman and Taylor Noetzelman added two hits each to support another win for Phillips.

The Wolverines struggled offensively and dropped a pair to Minneota/Canby on Tuesday.

The Wolverines fell 4-0 in game one and 2-1 in game two.

Emily Wrede and Haylee Sandry had a pair of hits for the Wolverines and Jennifer Sommers absorbed two tough losses, allowing just six hits in the two games.

Allie Trudel’s leadoff double in the bottom half of the 10th inning and an errant throw from Sauk Centre allowed Yellow Medicine East to win an inter-West Central conference game.

Sam Rigge scored twice pinch running for Trudel, who was 3-for-5 at the plate to support her complete-game win in the pitcher’s circle. Trudel struck out nine and held Sauk Centre to seven hits.

Marissa Sneller, Allie Zieske and Cassie Struffert had two hits each for YME (4-9).
