Prep softball: Tigers 3rd at Morris Invite

MORRIS -- The Morris/Chokio-Alberta softball team placed third and St. Cloud Apollo defeated Moorhead 6-5 in the championship game of the Morris Invitational Tournament Saturday.

MORRIS - The Morris/Chokio-Alberta softball team placed third and St. Cloud Apollo defeated Moorhead 6-5 in the championship game of the Morris Invitational Tournament Saturday.

The Tigers defeated MACCRAY 9-1 and Fargo Davie 11-1 in the third-place game. Their lone loss was an 11-4 setback against Moorhead.

MACCRAY was 1-2 in the tournament, downing Wheaton 10-2 but losing to the Tigers and to West Central Area 7-2.

In the three games, Morris/CA’s Becca Holland was 3-for-9, Lauren Reimers was 6-for-11, Abbie Olson was 3-for-10 and Abby Daly was 3-for-8.

The Tigers’ Brooke Gillespie was 2-for-6, Brooke Johnson was 4-for-7, Brianna Abril was 1-for-5 and Sam Henrichs was 2-for-6.

Kayla Pring was 3-for-6 and hit a two-run home run and also doubled against Fargo Davie.

In the pitching circle, Abril picked up one win, working eight innings and allowed two runs and struck out five.

Gillespie got the other win. She worked nine innings and struck out three. Lacee Maanum took the loss against Moorhead.

The Tigers are scheduled to play host to Montevideo at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

MACCRAY’s Molly Friese was 5-for-5 with two runs batted in and a stolen base, Kali Groen was 3-for-8 with three RBIs and Emily Orwick was 2-for-9 with two RBIs and two steals.

Kim Trulock was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Ellie Hultgren was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base and Annie Sandry was 1-for-6.

In the pitching circle for MACCRAY, Jennifer Sommers worked 12.2 innings, allowing five earned runs and striking out 15 and she earned the Wolverines’ win.

Sandry worked 4.1 innings and Maddy Zurn pitched two innings.

The Wolverines are scheduled to play host to Tracy-Milroy-Balaton at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in Raymond.
