Prep Softball: Weatherly near perfect as Morris/CA wins WCS title

OLIVIA -- Mackenzie Weatherly took a perfect game into the sixth inning and faced just two batters over the minimum after striking out 17 to spark Morris/Chokio-Alberta to a 2-0 win over BOLD Tuesday in the West Central South Conference.

The win allowed the Tigers to win the conference title outright.

Weatherly struck out the first nine batters she faced and didn't allow a hit until Carly Sigurdson singled with two outs in the sixth.

Weatherly knocked in the Tigers' (15-0, 17-1) first run when her fielder's choice drove in Katie Holzheimer. Haley Henrichs scored another run in the seventh.

BOLD (8-7, 8-9) starter Brittany Nissen gave up three hits, while striking out eight and allowing three walks and one earned run.

Brooke Wuertz, Jackie Skoglund, Caitlyn Gottwald, Shelby Goltz and Jessica Solum had two hits apiece to pace Paynesville's 13-hit attack.


Skoglund gave up 12 hits, but she didn't issue a walk and gave up just two earned runs to get the complete-game win.

Courtney Hinz went 3-for-4 while Angie Scheffler and Jennessa Hoffman added two hits apiece for Yellow Medicine East.

Caitlyn Gottwald and Jenna Kincade hit solo home runs for Paynesville as the Bulldogs (12-3, 14-3) invoked the 10-run rule in the sixth inning. Kincade's fourth hit of the game drove in the Bulldogs' 11th run.

Gottwald pitched 12/3 innings of scoreless relief to get the win.

YME (4-11, 5-13) scored in the second when Kendra Sander's sacrifice fly knocked in Allie Trudel, who got two hits, along with Angie Scheffler and Jennessa Hoffman.

A seven-run first inning ignited an offensive outburst for the visiting Falcons, who nearly put the game out of reach in the seventh by producing six more runs.

Paige Wilner, Natasha Dallmann and Payton Wilner had two hits apiece for Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City.

The Wildcats scored twice in the first inning behind Taylor Thunstedt's and Amanda Radel's run-scoring singles. NLS then scored two more in the second with Aasta Bakke driving in a run with a single.

Radel worked all seven innings in the pitcher's circle to collect the win.
