MOORHEAD - Willmar wrapped up the regular season by going 2-2 and placing seventh at the Moorhead Invite over the weekend.
The Cardinals opened with a 25-15, 21-25, 15-12 win over Ada-Borup before falling to Moorhead and Win-E-Mac, which finished fourth at last year’s Class A State Tournament. Willmar then swept East Grand Forks 25-20, 25-22 in the seventh-place match on Saturday.
Junior Riley Grussing was a sparkplug for Willmar as the setter piled up 93 assists, 25 digs, 11 ace blocks, 6 ace serves and 5 kills over the four matches. Junior Leah Ruter had a team-high 41 kills with junior Dani Rosen adding another 28 with 7 ace blocks.
Senior McKenzie Hastad led the Cardinals with 46 digs and junior Allie Roehl followed with 36 and Ruter 31.
Willmar will take a 14-15 record into Wednesday’s 7 p.m. playoff match at Waconia (21-7). The Cardinals are the No. 11-seed for the Section 2AAA tournament while Waconia is No. 6.
