Prep Volleyball: NLS goes 5-0 to capture Willmar title

WILLMAR -- New London-Spicer won all five of its matches Saturday and captured the title at the Willmar Volleyball Classic.

New London-Spicer improved to 17-1 this season. The Wildcats' lone loss came against Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, which they avenged with a three-game win in this tournament.

There were six teams in the field this year and the tournament changed to a round-robin format with each team playing all five opponents.

Benson won four of five matches to finish second. Willmar went 3-2 for third. BBE finished 2-3, Buffalo Lake-Hector 1-4 and Renville County West 0-5.

The Wildcats got 47 kills each from Taylor Thompsen and Karli Wendlandt. Cassie Ziemer finished with 28, Alanna Dietz 18, Justine Dammermann 14 and Karsee Knutson 10. Dammermann also had 104 assists. Ziemer led with 12 ace blocks, while Wendlandt had 10. Wendlandt also led with 40 digs. Jenna Moritz was next with 36.

For Benson (19-3), Kayla Hampton delivered 47 kills, Taylor Semler 33, Mallory Jensen 23 and Emily Auch 19. Semler also notched 103 assists, 51 digs and five ace blocks.

Hannah Smith paced Willmar (13-6) with 52 kills and 99 digs. Jena Thompson had 20 kills, seven ace blocks and six ace serves. Jennie Mattison had 45 assists and Addy Nelsen 41.

BBE (18-5) got 53 kills and nine ace blocks from Maggie Gruber, 25 from Shannon Gruber and 20 kills and 11 ace blocks from Rachel Anderson. Raeann Sorenson led with 40 digs. Brittany Roelike and Anna Marthaler had seven ace serves apiece.

No report was available from Buffalo Lake-Hector or Renville County West.

St. James Invite

Montevideo upended Worthington 25-23, 25-22 in the championship of the St. James Invitational on Saturday.

The Thunder Hawks (14-5) were led by Brooke Tastad with 38 kills and seven ace blocks and Beka Schwendemann with 28 kills. Nichole Strei had eight ace serves and Elissa Christensen led with 51 digs.

Redwood Valley won four of five matches and finished fifth.

Bailey Koster uncorked 36 kills and seven ace serves and had 40 digs for the Cardinals. Sam Felt added 32 kills and 40 digs. Abby MacHolda finished with 19 kills and eight ace blocks.
